EMF1 - Zeroing Fields with Helmholtz Coils

Nathaniel Kinsey, Saint Louis University

In this lab students explore the fields generated by Helmholtz coils, and in particular, the ability to generate a region of nearly uniform magnetic field. The lab explore the concept of cancellation of Earth's background magnetic field for sensitive applications such as scanning electron microscopy or nanofabrication. Students must measure the local magnetic field in a given location and then identify a proper setup to reduce this field below a given threshold. This lab is best paired with an experiment if available.
