Modeling Electric Motors & Generators

Back to Events Calendar

Development efforts to meet the demand for electric motors and generators have increased significantly with the electrification of the transport and energy industries. Modeling and simulation is an integral part of the R&D process in these areas, enabling engineers to address design considerations such as the need for electric motors that deliver high torque across a broad speed range and generators that provide power at low rotational speed.

The COMSOL Multiphysics® software and its add-on AC/DC Module offer extensive capabilities for modeling, simulating, and optimizing radial and axial flux machines using different principles of operation, such as permanent magnet, switched reluctance, and induction machines. The module offers the unique ability to handle nonlinear magnetic effects in combination with temperature-dependent properties and heat transfer, enabling the creation of high-fidelity models. Additional products further extend the software's multiphysics capabilities to conduct detailed stress and vibroacoustic analyses.

In this webinar, we will demonstrate the functionality in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software for analyzing rotating electric machines such as motors and generators. We will show how the software treats nonlinear magnetic effects such as hysteresis as well as temperature-dependent properties. In addition, we will briefly discuss the optimization capabilities through various examples.
