Microwave heating offers a promising route toward electrified chemical processing by enabling rapid, volumetric, and selective heating for process intensification. In this live webinar, Dr. Himanshu Goyal, associate professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Madras, will discuss the integration of microwave heating with multiphase reactors and the complexities involved in controlling temperature distribution.

Dr. Goyal will explore the strong coupling between electromagnetic wave propagation and heat transfer across multiple phases, such as gas–liquid and solid–fluid systems. A significant challenge in these simulations is the wide range of length scales, spanning from submillimeter features to full microwave cavities. He will talk about how the COMSOL Multiphysics® software is used to address this scale disparity through a specialized coarse-graining methodology that represents the multiphase system as an effective medium with equivalent dielectric properties.

This approach provides a computationally tractable framework for the detailed analysis of temperature distributions in complex systems. The talk will conclude with an examination of how microscale structures impact macroscopic heating behavior, providing critical insights into the design and optimization of microwave cavities and reactors for efficient and scalable operation.
