Deformed mesh problem - tracking descending interface in a reaction tank

I am trying to use deformed mesh to track a descending interface in a reaction tank. Please see the attached figure.
The tank consists of a porous electrode and filled with electrolyte originally. The electrolyte level keeps decreasing because of reaction. The exposed electrode is filled with air. To simplify the problem, now I set a prescribed constant velocity to the interface. The boundary grids are sliding on y direction accordingly. x-direction velocity of all the interfaces are set to be zero. Ideally the liquid/air interface would move downward and keep a straight line. However, the results shows unwanted deformation on x-direction and the moving velocity of grids on the interface become a function of x. I have tried different smoothing methods but still cannot get the expected results. Any tips would be helpful, thanks!
