Stress Analysis of a Roller Chain Sprocket Assembly
Application ID: 78171
Chain drives are used to transmit power between shafts separated by a distance. This example demonstrates the 3D modeling of a roller chain sprocket assembly consisting of a roller chain wrapped around two elastic sprockets. The motion of one sprocket is transmitted through the chain to the second sprocket, which is subjected to an opposing external torque. All components of the assembly are modeled as elastic.
The assembly geometry is created using built-in geometry parts, and the Chain Drive feature in the Multibody Dynamics interface is used to set up the model. A transient analysis is performed to investigate the load path, contact forces, and stress distribution in the components of the assembly.
This model example illustrates applications of this type that would nominally be built using the following products:
however, additional products may be required to completely define and model it. Furthermore, this example may also be defined and modeled using components from the following product combinations:
The combination of COMSOL® products required to model your application depends on several factors and may include boundary conditions, material properties, physics interfaces, and part libraries. Particular functionality may be common to several products. To determine the right combination of products for your modeling needs, review the Specification Chart and make use of a free evaluation license. The COMSOL Sales and Support teams are available for answering any questions you may have regarding this.
