Keynote: Multiscale Modeling Applications in Pharmaceutical Sciences
In pharmaceutical research and development, mathematical models can help mitigate the risks in translation and clinical drug development by supporting the quantitative understanding of the complex interactions between medicinal products and the human organism. When studying the phenomena that affect drug molecules after administration, such as drug transport, pharmacological activity, and effects on targeted organs and tissues, multiscale modeling is especially useful.
In this keynote talk from COMSOL Day: Pharmaceutical Applications, Dr. Roberto Andrea Abbiati discusses the use of quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) models as a decision-making tool for reducing costs and risks when developing nanotherapeutic products for cancer treatment. Abbiati also discusses how finite element analysis is useful for teaching graduate pharmaceutical sciences students about fundamental and innovative systems pharmacology concepts.
Roberto Andrea Abbiati is a senior research scientist in the department of Translational Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology at Boehringer Ingelheim. Since receiving his PhD in chemical engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy, in 2017, he has been conducting research in the area of QSP in multiple international institutes and companies.
