Thermal Expansion of a Laminated Composite Shell with Thermal Contact, Interface
Application ID: 90771
This example uses the thermal expansion of a laminated composite shell model to demonstrate the use of the feature Thermal Contact, Interface, applied on interfaces between layers in a laminated composite shell. The first study is computed neglecting this additional thermal resistance in the heat transfer model. Then, in a second study, a thermal contact resistance due to an air gap with a thickness about 1/10 of the layer thickness is taken into account. Results show moderate differences between the two approaches, the maximum values for temperature and stress fields increase in the second study.
This model example illustrates applications of this type that would nominally be built using the following products:
however, additional products may be required to completely define and model it. Furthermore, this example may also be defined and modeled using components from the following product combinations:
- COMSOL Multiphysics® and
- Composite Materials Module and
- Heat Transfer Module and
- either the MEMS Module, or Structural Mechanics Module
The combination of COMSOL® products required to model your application depends on several factors and may include boundary conditions, material properties, physics interfaces, and part libraries. Particular functionality may be common to several products. To determine the right combination of products for your modeling needs, review the Specification Chart and make use of a free evaluation license.
