Coupling acoustics in liquids or gases with structural mechanics has applications in many engineering fields, including loudspeakers, acoustic sensors, nondestructive testing, and medical ultrasound diagnostics.
This tutorial model demonstrates how to model the interaction between sound and elastic structures using an elastic cylinder immersed in water. Incident sound waves cause the cylinder to deform, and the resulting motion generates new sound waves in the surrounding water. Accurately describing this interaction therefore requires full bidirectional coupling between the acoustic medium and the elastic cylinder.
The model is an example of a scattering problem.
