Simulating Droplet Flow in Wearable Sweat Collection Patches - Archived
Sweat-based wearable devices are gaining traction as a noninvasive method of monitoring various biomarkers present in sweat, including glucose, lactate, and electrolytes. Dr. Siddhartha Panda, professor of chemical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, works on research involving droplet flow within wearable sweat collection patches using COMSOL Multiphysics®.
In this live webinar, Dr. Panda will discuss a simulation model predicting the behavior of droplet transport along straight and curvilinear wedge tracks that are superhydrophilic, surrounded by a superhydrophobic background. He will show how the simulation results correlate with experimental data in terms of shape evolution and velocity profiles. He will also demonstrate how to model droplet spread on superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic circular, patterned surfaces, including different droplet sizes and orientations.
Dr. Panda will conclude with how these simulation results can be used to enhance sweat patch designs by optimizing the microchannel geometries and surface patterns, ensuring efficient sweat collection and reliable biomarker analysis.

Dr. Siddhartha Panda is a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. His research is centered on chemical sensors for various applications, including healthcare, and involves studying transport, reactions, transductions, material processing, and intelligence using flexible printable platforms. Dr. Panda has authored over 75 research publications and holds more than 50 patents. Several technologies developed under his guidance at IIT Kanpur have been licensed to various industries. Before joining IIT Kanpur, he worked as a Staff/Advisory Engineer at the IBM Semiconductor Research Center in New York for more than six years. He earned his PhD from the University of Houston in 1999, an MS from the University of Cincinnati in 1995, and a B.Tech from IIT Kharagpur in 1992, all in chemical engineering.
